Description

26 cm; male 232g - female 202g. Male spectacular reddish crest, all dark plumage and bright red bare parts with a grayish belly. Female plumage green and gray. Immature birds resembles female.

Range

S Burma and SW Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia to Sumatra and Borneo.

Status

Not globally threatened, but considered vulnerable. Different distributions of birds depending where their location.

Ecology

Habitat
Evergreen forest, mainly in plains and foothills, but in places up to 1200m.
 
Niche
Omnivorous - Eats seeds large fruits, large beetles, wood ants, insects, small mollusc. Association with wild pigs reported- Whereby the birds can feed on discarded fragments of fruit which they would be unable to tackle whole.

Life History

Egg laying depends on locality. In Peninsular Malaysia. Egg laying happens in most months Dec.- Apr. Nests; simply a depression in dry leaves. 5-6 eggs incubation (in captivity) 18 -19 days. Females do the incubation. Associate in parties of 5-15 , scrabbling in the forest floor litter for food. Parties scatter noisly noisily when alarmed.
